The Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace is one of London's best-known monuments and a well-loved symbol of the Monarchy. It was unveiled on 16 May 1911 by King George V, who knighted the sculptor,Thomas Brock,on the podium of the Memorial. M.C Salaman wrote 'we have,in the centre of London,a sculptural monument of supreme importance...in its unity, dignity, and nobility of conception, its large simplicity and harmonious beauty oe design,[it]is in every way worthy of its purpose as a national and imperial tribute'(the Studio Magazine 1911).
