Over recent months the DVLA and Transport for London have been investigating and testing the use of chips or tags in number plates. This technology would allow law enforcement & civil service officials to track tagged vehicles by way of handheld receivers or roadside beacons. The introduction of such technology would not only open up motorbikes and other vehicles to road pricing and congestion charging on a national level, but would strike yet another blow at the heart of the freedoms of the British motorist.
