Proposal to update the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Video Display Unit (VDU) workstation checklist to view the “person” at the centre of the checklist and the peripherals and environment as secondary.
The HSE DSE VDU workstation checklist is currently in the following format: 1 Display screen, 2) Keyboards, 3) Mouse, trackball etc, 4) Software, 5) Furniture, 6) Environment. This views the person as secondary rather than central. This could contribute to an increase of problems using computer equipment such as MSD, RSI, WRULD.
It would be better if the HSE DSE VDU workstation checklist was constructed from the perspective of the person being central, such as: 1) Person, 2) Person, sitting on a chair, 3) Person, at a desk, 4) Person, using a Video Display Unit (VDU), 5) Person, using a computer keyboard, 6) Person, using a computer mouse (or other input devise) 7) Person, using computer software, 8) Person, within an office environment.
