We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to use the Secretary of State's Powers of Enforcement under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 to counteract the growing deplorable practice to deface, damage and desecrate Scheduled Ancient Monuments for the purposes of marketing and/or advertising/publicity stunts. Many monuments are sacred sites still regularly used for ceremonies and rituals and SAMs which have recently suffered abuse include The Longman of Wilmington, Cerne Abbas Giant, and Glastonbury Tor. More details from petition creator

In addition to actual damage, such desecration causes insult and distress to many people of diverse belief paths. The Schedule of Ancient Monuments is compiled and maintained by the Secretary of State under Section 1 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. The fact that a monument has been scheduled means that it has been recognised as being of national importance. The primary purpose of scheduling a monument is to preserve it for the future, and to protect it from damage, destruction or any unnecessary interference.
