More details from petition creator

The Payment Card Industry was formed in 2005 to define minimum security standards that should be in place around consumers debit and credit card details held on merchants computer systems.

Since then the response of merchants has been very poor, because of the time and cost of implementing these measures and the perception that the PCI have no power to enforce them.

Thus the card using public continues to shop and use their cards in a hostile and insecure environment. This petition is to ask the government to put things in place so that companies will be required by law to comply with the PCI: DSS by a specific date.
