Gilad Shalit is an Israeli soldier who was captured by Palestinian militants in Israel on 25 June 2006 and has been held hostage by Hamas since.

He has been held for over 2 years and his absence is causing immeasurable pain to his family and friend.

I believe that this is a crucial time for the United Kingdom government to use its influence within the international community to raise this issue in all talks with all the relevant Middle East parties and to use their position on the United Nations Security Council as a means of negotiating a breakthrough.
