Following recent incidences of lost or stolen personal records, we need tighter controls on who can collect people's details, how they can be stored and for how long.
Organisations should keep no information about individuals, unless explicit permission has been obtained from that person, with a specified number of copies and length of time.
Individuals should be able to refuse, without penalty, to give any details to any organisation.
On ceasing dealings with a person, or receiving a 'delete me' request, organisations should immediately remove all details about that person.
E.g.: *If I apply for a car insurance quote, and then choose not to use that insurer, all personal information used to obtain that quote must be destroyed.
*If I work for a company, I can withhold information such as my address and date of birth without the threat of losing my job or being discriminated against.
*If I go into hospital, a copy of my medical history must not be kept on the laptop of every consultant I see.
