We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Cease the commercial exploitation of sand and gravel from our sea bed. More details
Submitted by Pat Gowen of MARINET – Deadline to sign up by: 31 August 2007 – Signatures: 277
The huge scale commercial dredging of sand and shingle from the UK sea bed for use in the construction industry and for export is damaging our marine eco-system, destroying fish stocks and causing serious erosion to the East Anglian and other coastlines.
Coastal farms, housing, beaches, sand cliffs, salt marshes, vital natural habitats, dunes and sea defences are now being undermined and destroyed.
Coupled with the impact of Global Warming as induced sea rise and worsening weather, cuts to the sea defence budget and the governments 'Managed Retreat' policy, a serious threat is now posed.
